A TALENTED craftswoman who hand makes teddy bears from her home in Offenham is celebrating two major milestones this year.

For the past two decades, Jean Jephcott, aged 89, has lovingly designed and stitched 812 jointed teddy bears - including one specially made for the Queen on her 90th birthday.

She will celebrate Maypole Bears' 20th anniversary by welcoming guests to see, and 'adopt', the bears at her home in Gibbs Lane on Wednesday, October 19, from 10am.

And then, on Christmas Eve, the skilled artist will celebrate her 90th birthday with family and friends.

"It was a bit of a shock this year to realise that is was 20 years," said Mrs Jephcott. "I enjoy doing it and it seems to give pleasure to so many."

At the open day, she will offer a 20 per cent discount on each bear adopted to mark Maypole's - and her own - birthday.

Mrs Jephcott, who has made soft toys for more than 20 years, was encouraged to start Maypole Bears by her late husband, John.

She explained: "I didn't realise at the time, I think he was encouraging me so much so I would be occupied and not grieve too much. It has helped me."

Every bear which is adopted comes with its own birth certificate, and Mrs Jephcott pours all the proceeds back into buying more high-quality materials to make her bears.

Over the years, she has donated bears to various charities, and - with her late husband - she raised more than £28,000 for Arthritis Research by selling her soft toys.

"I am proud, but at the same time I feel it is pleasing other people in the world," said Mrs Jephcott. "I'm looking forward to the 19th - it is nice to share it with other people."
