Showtime‘s American Gigolo is giving the people what they want and what they want is Jon Bernthal. The actor oozes new levels of radioactive sex appeal in the first trailer for Showtime’s American Gigolo. The eight-episode series is an update of the famous 1980 film, but who cares about that? We just want to see Jon Bernthal strutting in suits, Jon Bernthal pulling down his pants, Jon Bernthal catching a pair of keys, Jon Bernthal brushing his hand up a lady’s bare back in public, Jon Bernthal… Well, you get the idea. We want to see Jon Bernthal and the American Gigolo trailer delivers.
American Gigolo tells the story of Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal), a male escort who is wrongfully convicted of killing one of his clients. When the truth comes out 15 years later, Julian is a free man, but he’s got a score to settle. American Gigolo will also follow Julian’s fraught relationship with his former lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol) and his complicated history with his mother. Meanwhile, while Julian struggles to figure out who he is, Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell) will try to untangle the reasons why Julian was framed.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so American Gigolo has a plot. Big whoop. We all know the reason why Showtime subscribers will tune in is going to be to watch Jon Bernthal throw down yet another devastating portrait of fractured masculinity. Bernthal is one of the most underrated actors working today, consistently delivering one masterful performance after the other. He’s recently reached “internet boyfriend” status, meaning he’s an up-and-coming actor women love to fawn over on social media. Bernthal is primed for a major breakout moment to launch him into the next level as a star. Based on the way he devours the screen with a physical presence that screams “horniness” in this trailer, American Gigolo might be the project that gets him there.
American Gigolo premieres on Friday, September 9 on streaming and on demand for all Showtime subscribers and will make its on-air debut on Sunday, September 11 at 9 PM on Showtime. According to Showtime, new episodes will continue to premiere early every Friday on streaming and on-demand before airing on Showtime, the channel, on Sundays.
